Hello everyone and welcome to the 2019-20 Honors Blog!
First things first, please make sure you add your name to your Blogger profile so that we all know who is who!
The Honors Council is so excited for this school year, so let's get into some ways you can help make it great!
As I stated in the email I sent out earlier, we do not have tests or quizzes in the Honors Program. This blog is what takes their place! Every Monday night, you will have a blog post due on the previous week's reading. Typically, the content of the blog posts is based on the reading that was assigned in class on Thursday. The content of these blog posts is largely decided by you, the writer. You can write about how the reading made you feel, some themes you have picked up on, theories about what will happen next, or even your questions about what the author is trying to convey to you. The one thing you are NOT allowed to blog about is a basic plot summary. These blog posts operate under the assumption that we have all read the assigned reading. We already know what happened. The purpose of the blog posts is to spark a deeper discussion and understanding of the literature we study, and that is the only reason that we do not have to take tests or quizzes. If at any point, the blog reflects that we as an Honors Program are not doing what we are supposed to do, tests and quizzes can and will be implemented.
That being said, here are the blog post requirements:
- Your blog post should be 1-2 paragraphs in length. You do not have to write a short essay every week. Just convey your insight on the reading and make sure that you leave room for your classmates to join the discussion!
- These blog posts are typically rather casual, so you don't have to write formally all the time. However, make sure you aren't using slang, emojis, or inappropriate language on any of your posts.
- Blog posts are due at 11:59 pm on Monday evenings. If they are late, points will be deducted.
- After you have made your blog post, please leave two comments on your classmate's blog posts. The purpose of this is to create an environment of open discussion amongst ourselves so that we can have meaningful, insightful conversations the next day in class. When you have commented on two posts, edit your blog post and leave a note saying which posts they are.
Ex: P.S. I commented on Gray and Joshua's posts.
- The comments are due by 9:29 am on Tuesday morning, right before class starts.
- If, for whatever reason, your blog posts or comments will not post correctly, make sure to let me know before their respective deadlines so I can make sure you don't lose points for posting late.
I know this may seem intimidating or overwhelming right now, but I promise you will get used to it and it will all make sense once we've done it a couple times. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to any of us on the Honors Council! I'm looking forward to this semester with you all!
