After I began digging into Kant's explanation of what exactly enlightenment is and how it is achieved, it didn't take long for me to recognize my own tutelage. It made me realize how invisibly dangerous over-reliance is. I know that reliance is a good thing in society, relationships, etc... But, I found myself wondering, "At what point does dependency become oppression, and how are we supposed to realize when we've fallen victim to it?" After a bit of reflection, Kant seemed to reply to my pondering. In summation, I'll know when I face oppression because I'll view a better circumstance as something that is too dangerous to pursue.
Despite Kant's long-drawn (but very interesting) ideas on enlightenment, I find that the process can be fairly simple: Don't fall victim to a dependency that results in complaceny. As I continue to adjust to my new home, new school, and new relationships, I'll keep this thought in mind.
