Why KANT We be Bold? //Mackenzie Jackson

Starting the year off with this reading of "What is Enlightenment" by Immanuel Kant has really opened my eyes to a new perspective. As a freshman at a new school, new city, and having new friends, it's very difficult to "have courage to use your own direction" as Kant states, especially when you have no idea where you are going. The easy thing to do is follow the crowd. I know this through past experiences, and surely I am not alone. We all have the opportunity to either follow our 'friends' or choose God's path for us. The mindset of our society today setting us back. Through social media we are brain washed to look, act, and think a certain way, and if you Sapere aude! [Dare to know]” as Kant explains to us you are the one who doesn't fit in. Kant explains that there are four reasons as to why we(as humans) are scared to be different, they are laziness, cowardliness, monopoly of knowledge, and complacency. Kant is correct when he makes these remarks towards our hesitancy of being different.
This reading has introduced another reason as to why I love the University of Mobile. Here, we are taught to be different and to think for ourselves. We are meant to be different because being normal is boring!
