blank slate, who dis?

Spencer Wood

Can we have a Blake Slate? Can we as Christians who are fallen have a Blake Slate? Can we as a species honestly say that there is not a core influence that affects all of us independently? Do humans have a hive mind?

I like the idea of the blank slate theory, but I have a few rebuttals. One, the curse of seminal sin. If the curse is real, which it is, then each human is born cursed — cursed with the knowledge of good and evil. That basically eliminates any type of 'blank.' this leads me to believe that there is a core influence on all of humankind. We know that it's the Holy Spirit. But there's more. The Holy Spirit is intuition on right and wrong, not necessarily survival skills. So how has the human race lasted this long with how spread out we are? An excellent example is dragons. There is no empirical evidence for dragons to exist; however, they do exist over almost every culture on earth. Also, they exist independently from each other. So can we say that dragons didn't exist? No; it would ignorant to deny existence on the sole basis of a lack of physical evidence. Now one can argue that dragons lived in folklore that traveled across trade routes in Europe and Asia, but there are myths from the Aztec, Shawnee, Zuni, and even New England. So there must have been some figment of truth. But again, there is no physical evidence. So how are there so many different, unconnected cultures with the same stories? Evolutionary instinct. I believe that there is a very small, and no longer prevalent, part of the human mind that is used for survival instincts and is updated in a hive fashion. This also proves that no man can be a blank slate because the experiential evidence he may have is not necessarily his own experience.

This was an interesting take on the read. I would say I'd have to agree that our slate isn't so blank due to the taint of the sin in our blood. We will always be drawn heavily to one side of things.

This is pretty interesting. I would have to agree with you on the fact that human nature is cursed to be sinful; however, I would also have to question what you mean by a blank slate. I do not think humans can wipe their own slate clean. Although I do believe once one has become a Christian God no longer sees our past sinfulness and shame, He sees that the blood of Jesus covers us causing us to have a clean slate.

I believe through our fallen nature, we are born sinful. We cannot have the blank slate you spoke of in your first rebuttal as our slate is born drowned in sin and Christ is our only means of having a fresh slate. Christ cleans our slate
