Locke Technically Coined REM Sleep Before Anybody Else Did- Also, My Favorite Part of his Inquiry- Zane Duke

Hello my friends. What a wonderful, perfectly tempered Monday night we have on our hands. I am here today typing words in this computer that I hope will engage your thinking.

Sorry, I just finished the reading. I tend to talk like the authors when I read stuff (lol).

Anyhow, I just wanted to take five or six seconds of your time to talk about how LOCKE PRETTY MUCH PREDATED THE PEOPLE WHO CAME UP WITH REM SLEEP. You guys have heard of REM sleep before right? It's when you dream- this is the best kind of sleep that you get- and I think it's really cool that Locke kind of touched on this. Here's the quote:

"Those, at least, who do at any time sleep without dreaming, can never be convinced that their thoughts are sometimes for hours busy without their knowing of it; and if they are taken in the very act, waked in the middle of that sleeping contemplation, can gie no manner of account of it."

I know it doesn't sound like REM sleep, but just hear me out. When I fall asleep in class (it happens), sometimes I have these images pop up in my head- sometimes I recollect them, most of the time I do not. When you're asleep, your mind crazily enough is still active, which can only mean that we are thinking about things without even knowing it- hence REM sleep. It's a way deeper form of thought. If i'm not as read up on this as I think I am, call me out. But Locke basically talked about REM sleep before that kind of stuff was even thought about scientifically because when we wake up from REM sleep we aren't going to be able to tell someone what we were thinking about in our sleep, but somehow we'll recognize whatever we were unconciously thinking about from somewhere. Maybe that's where Deja-Vu comes from.

Furthermore, I found something else that I thoroughly enjoyed about Locke- his conviction. Check this out:

"Men may find every matter sufficient to busy their heads, and employ their hands with variety, delight, and satisfaction, if they will not boldly quarrel with their own constitution, and throw away the blessings their hands are filled with, because they are not big enough to grasp everything."

Basically what Locke is saying here is that God has blessed us all with A LOT. Think about it- you're thinking right now. (Just thinking out loud here. XD) He says that the experiences we have had throughout our lives and the reflections we have made upon these experiences create this "constitution"- our foundational beliefs and opinions- and that this is a huge blessing for us. The problem that we have is that we take this for granted, like many other things. We let things get in the way of our heads and we second guess ourselves- we battle with our thoughts. This is where many lose their faith. But what Locke wants us to do is value each experience and reflect intentionally upon them, because whether they were good or bad our experiences have God's name written all over them. No, God didn't intentionally bring bad things upon you, that's just the world we live in. What God wants to do is create something beautiful out of the bad experiences in your life, so that when you share them with others, lives are changed.

That's enough from me. Let me know what you think!

Love y'all. Peace.

Very interesting post!! I like your connection of Locke's description to the modern understanding of REM sleep. He did mention the foundational aspects that make up REM sleep and made descriptions that are easy to overlook if we assume REM sleep was already discovered and identified. He did say how we as humans take far too many things for granted, and as such we should pay attention to the many blessings we receive and praise God for them.
