pride- Madison Flowers

Throughout this entire book, all I can think about is one thing.
Pride.
This whole thing began because of pride.
Satan believed he was good enough to be God. He was too powerful, too important to be below God.  He was too arrogant to accept God’s Son as his authority. In his vain attempt to prove his worth and power, he destroyed every good thing that had ever been given to him. I wonder if he had always felt that he deserved to be in the top spot or if those feelings only began to occur when the Son came into the picture?
And what about Eve? I could honestly write a book on how much Eve aggravates me, but let’s stick to the matter at hand: her pride. When Satan came up to tempt her, he used flattery to soften her up. Satan knew her vanity was one of her weaknesses, her pride in herself. Eve’s whole reason for eating the fruit was because she wanted to prove herself. Even after she realized what she had done was wrong, she was too prideful to admit it. She and Adam stood there arguing over whose fault it was, both too prideful to admit they were wrong (until God actually showed up). This is a super random thought, but I wonder what it was like for Eve to grow old. She took such pride in her beauty, she stood there for how long just staring at herself in the water’s refection, and I wonder how she felt when her hair started turning gray or when the wrinkles started to form on her face. It must have been a knock to her pride for sure.

Yes, I totally agree. Pride was one of mankind's greatest flaws back then, is one of mankind's greatest flaws right now, and will be one of mankind's greatest flaws until the end. "I deserve this." Both Satan and Eve had that same mentality when they fell. "I deserve this." The very instance we have the audacity to tell God this is the very instance we lose our chance to deserve something good. I also really like the part where you say Satan uses flattery to reel his victims in and can't side with you enough. Sometimes, he will even pretend to be sympathetic to our complaints and then whisper into our ear lies when all the pain turns to anger. He is like that bully in middle school who sweet talks you into sharing your secrets and lords them over your head afterwards

I like the thought about Satan may have always wanted God's job or only after Jesus showed up. But the idea that Jesus showed up after God is crazy since Jesus is fully God. The real question is did Satan know what he was destined to be so he thought that if he could overthrow God he could change his destiny? But there is no sin or temptation in heaven so was that rule set after he left because of him or....? But angles don't have free will.

I agree with your sentiment. Pride has resulted in the downfall of many- biblical figures, or otherwise. As Rachael said earlier, pride was, and still is, one of humanity's biggest problems. The pursuit of vanity and overwhelming pride has resulted in countless tragedies. For example, the Cain's hurt pride resulted in the very first murder. There is a reason that pride is one of the seven deadly sins, and (in my opinion) the worst of them all.

I agree! Pride is a very common theme among these characters. Isn't it funny to think, though, that their pride led straight to humiliation? After the knowledge of evil took effect, the couple realized their nakedness, and all that could clothe them was their shame. It's a sobering message. Pride leads to humiliation.

It's sad how one sin lost all of paradise. And all three characters-Satan, Adam, and Eve-fell prey to the same thing. Pride, elevating one's self to godhood. Basically putting ourselves in God's place, dethroning him, and acting if he was never there in the first place. Great post!

I love how this got your attention in such an intense way. Because really the sin described in the reading and all sin ever all boils down to sin. When we sin we think our ways are somehow better than God's way and we defy Him only to if your like me come crawling back sobbing wondering why you made that choice in the first place. Pride should rock our world like you described it in your blog post. Satan and Adam + Eve fell because they fed into the lie that they could do it better than God. Thank you for reminding us to be watchful of roots of pride because they won't lead to anywhere but sin since the only thing we can boast in is Christ. I truly loved reading your blog.
