Throughout this entire book, all I can think about is one
thing.
Pride.
This whole thing began because of pride.
Satan believed he was good enough to be God. He was too
powerful, too important to be below God. He was too arrogant to accept God’s Son as his
authority. In his vain attempt to prove his worth and power, he destroyed every
good thing that had ever been given to him. I wonder if he had always felt that
he deserved to be in the top spot or if those feelings only began to occur when
the Son came into the picture?
And what about Eve? I could honestly write a book on how
much Eve aggravates me, but let’s stick to the matter at hand: her pride. When
Satan came up to tempt her, he used flattery to soften her up. Satan knew her
vanity was one of her weaknesses, her pride in herself. Eve’s whole reason for
eating the fruit was because she wanted to prove herself. Even after she
realized what she had done was wrong, she was too prideful to admit it. She and
Adam stood there arguing over whose fault it was, both too prideful to admit they
were wrong (until God actually showed up). This is a super random thought, but
I wonder what it was like for Eve to grow old. She took such pride in her
beauty, she stood there for how long just staring at herself in the water’s
refection, and I wonder how she felt when her hair started turning gray or when
the wrinkles started to form on her face. It must have been a knock to her
pride for sure.
