As we reach the end of Paradise Lost, we see Satan's plan come to fruition, as well as gods punishments of man. Yet, even with the burdens that Adam and Eve now had to bear, their punishment could have been much worse had God deemed it necessary. Eve may get excruciating pain in childbirth and Adam might have to toil to provide sustenance for him and his family but at least god did not just kill them. Eves punishment, while severe, will bring about a new life which I would imagine makes her punishment far more bearable. While Adam will have to toil all day in the fields, at least he has a family to provide with the spoils of his hard work. They do not even have to pay the full price of their sin because Jesus decides to take that burden upon himself. It is simply incredible how great the mercy of god is to allow us to live with minor punishments even though what we deserve is death. Satan and his friends got transformed into snakes by God, so I feel that by comparison we got off easily. Yet, after all the punishments are doled out, we see a glimmer of hope in Adam as he is shown the future of mankind. Showing that even though mankind is now rotten, we will be redeemed through the power of Jesus.
