In book 5 of Paradise Lost, I saw an interesting connection. This is definitely my own personal opinion but I think it is an interesting one. So we see Eve having a dream. She hears a voice and follows this voice to a tree. Once she is there a being in the form of an angel takes fruit from the tree and eats it, then proceeds to try and share the fruit with Eve. Before she has the opportunity to respond and take the fruit, the angel vanishes and the dream ends. She wakes up the next morning and shares the dream to Adam and he isn’t that concerned with it and they continue on with starting their day. Because of his response God sends Raphael down to warn Adam that the dream Eve had is going to happen and he needs to be aware. Even after that warning, Adam and Eve still sin. They still go against what they have been warned about. When I read this, I immediately drew the connection back to us as christians today. To me, Raphael could be a representation of the Bible or the Holy Spirit in our lives. As an example, we know we are not supposed to lie. Proverbs 12:22 says, “Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight.” The Bible states very specifically that lying is sinning against God. Constantly we get into situations and we are tempted to lie. The Holy Spirit convicts us not to go against what we have read in the Bible about right and wrong. Even with that warning we still lie, we still sin, we still make daily decisions that are wrong and dishonoring to our God. Raphael warned Adam and they still sinned. The Bible warns us and we still sin. This is a reminder to me that even when we are reading the Bible and learning about what we should and shouldn’t do the devil is still ready to attack. We should always be growing in our relationship with Christ and always be ready to fight the temptations from the devil.
