sex, sin, and heresy

spencer wood

While I tried to move past the gross, r/niceguys Tartuffe lines, I couldn't move past this one bit of heresy. (Surprising, right?) "Sinning in private is no sinning at all."

First off:
1) God aint dumb.
2) We aint slick.

God is an omnipotent, omnipresent being that cannot be surprised or outsmarted. and we are fallible meat sacks with free will. Psalm 139 speaks on this.
7 Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.

It is folly to think we can avoid our sin by keeping it secret. It is double folly to tell ourselves that we are better than others because we sin in private rather than in public. And it is the very height of folly to convince ourselves that we can get away with sin by covering it up. "He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper" (Proverbs 28:13). All sin is an assault against God, whether it is done in public or in secret. And God, who beholds even the innermost secrets of the heart, sees our sin clearly, no matter how well we think we have covered it.

I agree that heresy is in order to be served to Tartuffe here. And I greatly appreciate the fact that with the right humility, one can see himself in Tartuffe. We can sometimes manage to convince ourselves that "God does this" or "it's okay for that to happen" and Tartuffe really displays just what will happen when you really let the devil get in your head and start planting bad seeds. Thank God for his mercy and grace, because Lord knows every single one of us needs more and more of it every day.

What wishful thinking on Tartuffe’s part. But even if that was so; what would private mean exactly? God sees all, so that’s not private. And if you are winning with someone, they are with you so that’s not private in some regards. Work on the holes in your theology Tartuffe. Great blog Spencer.
