What I find to be the most beautiful lines in Paradise Lost is found in book V:
"Freely we serve
Because we freely love as in our will
To love or not: in this we stand or fall.
And some are fall'n, to disobedience fall'n
And so from Heav'n to deepest Hell. O fall
From what high state of bliss into what woe!"
I can read and re-read these lines over and over finding the beauty of our Lord. Not only are these words from Raphael speaking of Satan's fall and the foreshadow of man, but of something truly majestic that we all could have access to.
These lines speak of freedom, love, bliss, and truth.
It's also a warning against fall, disobedience, Hell, and woe.
Given the gift of freewill, I see my God. Through freedom, I have ability to choose His love everyday and I honestly can't think of a sweeter gift (other than salvation.) Whether "[t]o love or not" each morning who He is and who we are in Him, allows us to either become more enriched in love or fail in our own ways, which just proves all the more the need of The Lord. We have days of both, but unfortunately some will never experience one of those sides.
These lines speak honest truth of where we can be with or without God. It shows us all the better of why to continue to strive for obedience - one of the hardest choices to make daily. The last line shows what we will have by making the right choices with our freewill - bliss. This section is full of encouragement to fellow christians, it gives us meaning and I for one need to be reminded of my meaning. And until bliss, I don't think it would be such a bad decision to fight for godliness.
