Locke seems to draw out a point longer than is necessary, but he does make some interesting points which are certainly impressive for someone of his time. At the end of Chapter I, after Locke has evaluated what looks to be the concept of multiple personalities in dissecting the body’s thoughts from the soul’s thoughts, Locke comes to a decision on what human intellect is. Locke claims, “the first capacity of human intellect is, -that the mind is fitted to receive the impressions made on it…”
While Locke continues the explain how this is necessary for any understanding, I think his realization is so interesting to look at from the perspective of someone who believes in God. Locke’s claim asserts that the human mind was made to receive outside information and learn. I think from this reading we can also come to the conclusion that a Higher Being (God) made the human mind intentionally and with great care. Locke’s understanding shows that the human mind was not a sudden accident or a creature that slowly formed from miniscule creatures in a swamp. The complexity of human thought, reasoning, and understanding gives way to the idea of an all-powerful Maker. I think that we can find comfort when we consider how our minds work in knowing that we can mull over difficult concepts, question tradition, and believe in that which we cannot physically see. Our minds were made on purpose for the purpose God has set for us to fulfill.
Your mind was made in such a beautiful way that you can grow and learn by observing the world around you and pondering the thoughts inside your head. You are capable of joining the conversation of writers and teachers who have gone before you and have left evidence of what they learned. Your mind is incredible and points straight to an incredible Maker.
