Death, Illness,and Mankind Katie Byars

"Man can surmount all his real enemies and become master of the whole animal creation... Man is the greatest enemy of man" When we in this day in age we have communication and travel around the world easy and fast. We have overcome the obstacles of the past and have united the world in an uneasy peace that has lasted so far. But are our greatest enemies. We compete against each other for resources and fight against one another blaming each other when things go wrong. We just cannot come together to help one another out with problems like starvation, shelter or medical bills. I wonder how much of Demea`s statement is true "and they would soon dissolve that society which they had formed, were it not for the dread of still greater ills" if mankind did not have other worries to attend to like illness would we kill each other? Then again its not like illnesses like the black plague have not taken many many lives either. Would civilization go back in time and we lose knowledge? When the Library of Alexandria was burned lots of knowledge was lost because of the actions of people. Who knows where we would be if that knowledge had been preserved and been able to grow. We might be living in space right now.
