I cannot believe how much Wollstonecraft changed the world about 230 years after it was written. In today's society, women finally have the freedom to learn as they please, and the public school system follows what she envisioned. However, there are multiple things that have yet to come to fruition.
First, the friendship of husband and wife in the home. In Woll.'s time, it was very common for the man to be unfaithful to the wife, and very frequently would leave her and the children to fend for themselves after she becomes "unwanted". Nowadays, in the land of "equality", there is no improvement. One out of every two families divorce. A number of causes are the culprits, including "falling out of love" and adultery. The popular romanticized marriage of today is still the same, possibly worse, than that of Woll.'s time.
Also, because of this lack of friendship and cooperation in the home, more and more children are being neglected and abandoned. The National CASA Association reported in 2017 that 9 out of every 1,000 kids in the US were determined to be victims of abuse or neglect. Furthermore, it was reported by the US Department of Health and Services that 49% of all children that enter into the foster care system were 5 years old or younger upon entry.
Although Wollstonecraft got the education she wanted for women, the results that she hoped for haven't come to fruition. Why? Is it because she was wrong in her viewpoint? Was it because she was selfish and crazy? Personally, I believe that until we focus our marriages and friendships in marriages on God, we will never climb out of the grave that we have dug.
