Overall, this was a very hard read. There were a few things that stuck out to me. I noticed that Hume's points make sense outside of the Bible. If we take what Hume says without any knowledge or regard for the Bible, he makes a pretty sound deduction. But that is not what I did. I kept thinking about God's Word and if I believe that it is true then I know that Hume is wrong.
In Hume's Essay 1 - Of the Immortality of the Soul, he talks about who has the authority to say what is right and wrong. He says that man does not have the authority to say what is right and wrong. If that is true, then who has the authority? Well, if we take the Bible and know that it is true, we know that God has that authority.
Also, Hume talks about how there cannot be a heaven and hell because there is no natural proof of its existence. But if we know that God has the authority to say what is right and wrong then He is very knowledgeable. Then we can deduce that if the Bible is inspired by God (2 Timothy 3:16), then the Bible is a book that is to be trusted and respected. Thus, heaven and hell must be real.
Another thing on my first point, if there is no punishment for in the why did Jesus live and die? If we can do no wrong then what was the point of Jesus's life? The simple truth is that it would have been for nought. We know, however, that that is not true because all are sinners (Romans 3:23). If we have all sinned and if sin is wrong then there must be some kind of punishment. Now we are at the purpose of Jesus's life. Jesus was sent to earth to live a perfect life and die sinless so that those who believe in Him will not have to suffer the consequences of sin.
Hume's writing is very hard to comprehend and to be honest I did not understand the majority of it. But what I do know (contrary to Dr. Mashburn's warning) is that this book did not cause me to doubt. It makes me confident that God is real, we are sinful, heaven and hell are real, and Jesus died so we would not have to suffer the consequences of sin.
P.S. I commented on Makenzie’s and Logan’s posts.
