a great big world // hannah schofield

howdy, fellas!
For those of you in ASOTA like myself, welcome to Spec Week! Should be a good one this year!
Otherwise, let’s talk about Pascal’s thoughts on Man’s Disproportion.
While reading this I was caught up in realizing just how small we are in comparison to the world, the galaxy, the universe. I don’t know about the rest of you, but sometimes I’ll be standing somewhere in Saraland or wherever I happen to be, and I get caught up in the fact that the world is so big and so filled with individuals racing through their own journeys. How crazy.
Pascal said it best with, “Returning to himself, let man consider what he is in comparison with all existence, let him regard himself as lost in this remote corner of nature; and from the little cell in which he finds himself lodged, I mean the universe, let him estimate at their true value the earth, the kingdoms, the cities, and himself. What is a man in the Infinite?”
We are minuscule in comparison to everything else, and it is almost impossible to truly know why everything is the way it is. If nothing else, it can be a humbling experience.

Yes, I agree. I have been mind blown several times with this subject. If I think about it too much my brain either explodes or turns to mush. It is so hard to fathom how big the world is. To think about how the universe is ginormous. The universe is bigger than ginormous. Then to think we have our own lives that God has orchestrated and that God has orchestrated ALL the people that have lived, live presently, and will live. He orchestrated how the lives intertwine and interact. This is very humbling to think about.

Yes! I appreciated that part of the reading because it really made me stop and consider how great God is and the very fact that He does know our weaknesses and strengths and yet still loves us and wants US to know HIM! God amazes me and this was a great reminder of the honor that it is the serve and love Him.

I think a lot of the time we can get caught up in the idea of "I am going to change the world!" We see ourselves as these big, influential creatures. Humility seems to be lost and all we think about is making an impact. It takes stepping back and seeing that we are really small in this world. I think sometimes it actually takes failing to see that comparison Pascal talks about. Great post!

Hannah, I loved your post! One of my favorite and most "shooketh" feelings is when I just stop and re-realize like "God is real. God is huge. He knows everything about me, and loves me. This universe could expand forever. There could be so many animals in the ocean that we'll never learn about them all." The fact that we are but passengers on this ship called Earth is a very groundbreaking realization.
