What is a church? - Anna Grace

In Locke's chapter on "what is a church?", I found some interesting points that I may or may not agree with. He speaks in this chapter about the church, the expectations, the expectation of leadership, and what a church believes. In his series of points, Locke makes an interesting point. He states, "Does an assembly that has Christ in the midst of them lack anything needed to make it a true church? It certainly doesn't lack anything needed for salvation of souls, and that is all that matters." I would argue with Locke. Yes, the most important thing in your life, is accepting Christ. After accepting Christ, there are many good things to do with your life, one of those is attending church. That verse he mentioned is taken out of context so very much in today's culture. Part of following God is that christian's have fellowship with other believers in the Lord's house and hear the gospel proclaimed and music sung. As the church, there are church ordinances that you must follow as well. Those being baptism and the Lord's supper that can't be done as a small group of believers in someone's house. Salvation of souls is always important and where we meet is defiantly important but it isn't the main focus.  God can do a work in you and save you whether you are in a church or not.

I agree! I think that if all you needed in a church service was God and His presence, then the commandment to share the gospel would be irrelevant. Then there would be no need for humans to evangelize.
