"And it is this refrain that we hear repeated by everyone: you are not at home, this is not a sanatorium, the only exit is by the way of the Chimney."
Suffering is one of many words to describe the crude nature of the Holocaust. From history lesson to this writing of this book, we see a deeper meaning into what the word "suffering" shows us. Primo and his prisoners at the time were faced with many hellish trials while being in Auschwitz. The brutal horrors of this time was not a scary movie or haunted house, it was a life these people were forced to live in. With little food, lousy serving, thin slices of whatever you could think of, it amazes and kinda scares me of what it would've been like to be in that period of time. From wearing little clothing to shoes that would maybe cause blisters to be infected, Levi demonstrates the suffering these prisoners faced. To the Nazi army, they were nothing but a number and a practice dummy. They were emotionally and physically deprived. Going back in time, if we lived in the age of the Holocaust and the threatening Hitler, what would be your emotional state if you were put in the shoes of these "prisoners"? How would you be able to handle yourself?
