Wait so ... what? Osten

Ok so I know we talked about there being a lot of imagery in this book but I never imagined there would be this much. The phrase "Poor boy" kept coming up and when it was explained I was shocked but it did help provide a lot of context to the book. The idea that all the ghosts he kept talking to were a representation of all the people who hade made an influence in his life was interesting but I still don't understand why they wanted him to kill so badly. Maybe they were a construct of his nervousness? Either way, I am glad and upset that he killed John Dawson. I wanted his character to rebel and run away but looking back I'm glad he didn't because it explains why he saw his face at night, (he killed himself) why they kept calling him poor boy, (he died). Another reason I wished he hadn't killed is because it's sad to see someone come so far, to survive Auschwitz, just to kill their humanity.

That's the point that Wiesel is making: people can survive horrible things and still do horrible things to others. What I find interesting is that Elisha knew this was happening, that he was killing himself, and yet he still went through with it.

The man definitely had issues from his past experiences, and that was coming back to haunt him. It takes more than hate to break the cycle. A pure and holy desire is needed.
