Fear and Strength - Addison Zanda

"Alba was curled up in the darkness. They had ripped the tape from her eyes and replaced it with a tight bandage. She was afraid. As she recalled her Uncle Nicholas's training, and his warning about the danger of being afraid of fear, she concentrated on trying to control the shaking of her body and shutting her ears to the terrifying sounds that reached her from the outside." (Pg. 344).

As we read to the end of the book, chapter fourteen captures a detail of strength through darkness. Reading this, I think it's difficult to try and see the torment Alba had been put through. The boldness she had to take everything that her grandfather did and allow herself to be at "fault" is truly admirable. Though she had a powerful strength, she did face a sever amount of fear. Alba's fear and strength point me to Psalm 46:1-3, "God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge!" Even in the face of utter destruction, the psalmist expressed a quiet confidence in God's ability to save him. Facing destruction, terror, and crumble is almost impossible without the factor of fear. God is our eternal refuge, even in the face if total destruction. Like the psalm writer, would you confidently say, "[I] will not fear," even if the world and terror seems to crumble around you?

I, too, admire Alba’s strength in that moment. She resembled, for me, what Clara silently was. She had a certain resolve in her when everyone was screaming at her and everything she’d known was crumbling around her, that was more than admirable. I like your application of the psalms here in relation her dark moment and confidence.

There is a lot in this book that frustrates and disgusts me, but I will admit that I’m impressed at the courage and determination expressed in certain characters in the book. Alba has especially surprised me and really led me to think deeper into this novel. Linking courage with the Psalms is an excellent connection.
