monotony the silent killer

Spencer Wood

one symbol i found in this incredibly tiring book was food. at the beginning of chapter two, Allende (in my opinion) spent an entire page too long describing the food Esteban and Férula were eating. greasy soup and tasteless fish. this is parallel to the boring tasteless life that they had at the time.

this is kinda relative to what we are experiencing now, or at least what I'm experiencing, with the quarantine. over the past few weeks, I have had very minimal human contact and more ramen than I care to admit. but thankfully I've only been doing this for a few weeks and not for a lifetime.

later on, we see Esteban saving up his money in order to buy a Viennese coffee. symbolizing the life he wished for, wealth. but in a twist of fate, he was denied the coffee and it spilled all over his only suit. Esteban wanted to control his own fate and it took much determination and tenacity.

during this boring time of social isolation and self-quarantine, we too need to find some flavor in our lives. maybe that is sitting outside for a little bit, or watching a specific tv show on a specific day, or playing Pokémon: Omega Ruby, etc. the point is to find something to end the monotony of quarantine (Safely) so you don't go bonkers during this time.

wash your hands, please
