In all honesty, I have no clue as to why we are reading The House of the Spirits. The books we've read in the past all encouraged empathy, but this book seems to encourage you to hate the characters, or at the very least dislike them. I mean, look at Esteban Trueba for example.
It also makes no sense that there is magic in the story. All the other stories we've read thus far were grounded in reality, but throwing a clairvoyant into the story also throws a wrench into the works. It's just confusing.
All in all, I end up with more questions than answers. Questions like: "why are we reading this?" and "why did Allende even write this in the first place?"
Edit: Commented on Caroline Tucker's and Osten Belew's posts
