It's pretty wild how God speaks...
I was reading through Romans last night before reading Things Fall Apart and I was shocked at how crushingly accurate Achebe's depiction of the missionaries are. It was stinging to read through the details of how Reverend Smith caused so much conflict and strife. Don't get me wrong, all of the other plot points, chapters and meanings of the book were great as well, but one of my biggest pet peeves is when evangelism is done in the wrong way for the wrong purposes. It ties in a lot to the discussion of faith and works found in Romans. It's sickening to see how it was the Christian white men that essentially ruined a peaceful community (at least for a time- it's difficult to say whether it would have "gone back to normal"). I know this isn't all necessarily the main point of the reading, but I think it's worth noting that it wasn't coincidence to read Romans ch1-6 and then read this.
I commented on Logan and Rebecca's posts.
