While reading Born a Crime, it is clearly evident how outgoing and bold young Trevor is. He is slightly mischievous and a tad rebellious, but these traits were inherited directly from his incredible mother.
I was blown away by the strong-willed nature of Trevor's mother, Patricia. In a time when whites and blacks could not legally coexist as equals, this brave woman went ahead and had a child with a man of the opposite race. For her to even come that far, Patricia first moved away from her home decided to instead live in Johannesburg. This move was a complete game-changer and, in addition, was a practically unheard-of event! In a time when it was illegal for blacks to live outside of designated black neighborhoods, this brave woman secretly rented an apartment in a predominantly white city. She also got a job working as a secretary when a typical occupation for a woman of her age and race was strictly limited to working in a factory or for some other similar service.
Her strength to push through literally every single obstacle that she came across was truly inspiring. Patricia's rebellious spirit is what led her to live the life she both desired and deserved.
As the story continues, I hope to see Trevor grow-up to be like his mother. He already shows quite a few of her defining characteristics.
