Why do bad things happen to good people? -Abbie Hedden

Why do bad things happen to good people? The thought process necessary to understand this answer may lead to the answer of the question "Can we comprehend God through creation?"

If you've ever spoken to people about your faith, and I really hope you have, then you have probably heard the question "If God is real, [or good, or just] then why do good things happen to bad people?" I counter: If God isn't good, then would we know what bad is? What would our definition of bad and good be? And further, where are these good people you are talking about? From a Christian standpoint, there's no such thing as a "good person," just a person who stands in the righteousness of God. I understand that many religions, such as Humanism, believe that goodness can be achieved. To summarize,  we understand that the world is imperfect, which means that there must be something perfect. But if the world is imperfect, then the perfect thing or being must be outside of this world. So, by looking at creation, we can understand that there is a higher, perfect being. That is the first thing we can comprehend about God through creation. Other attributes can be explored following this same logic, such as His infinity. We understand we are finite creatures and that everything on this earth has an end, but there is a sense of wrong in death. We mourn those who die, I believe, because we understand that it isn't right, we weren't originally meant to die and end the way we do post-Fall.

God's creation is one of the clearest pictures to me that He does, in fact, exist. Currently at the top of my bucket list of Things God Made That I Want To See are the Uyuni salt flats in Bolivia. The sand reflects the sky and every time I see pictures of it I am completely awestruck that it's just a subset of God's infinite imagination and that there is so much more that He's imagined. I'm so thankful that God lets us see Him through His handiwork so that we can see He exists just by using our eyes!

I thoroughly enjoyed your commentary and your questioning. These are such deep things to think about, especially the fantastic theology you laid down on humility. I completely agree that we can't say there is a good person in this world, because if there were "good" people "bad" people, then people would not be considered equals- which is something that scripture tells us we are (Romans 3:23). When it comes to good or bad, I do believe that in good and bad, and it is discerned only through scripture. But I do not believe that we can be the judge of that outside of what God says. We need to be careful not to hold ourselves too high in comparison to others. Zane Duke
